Mary

My family has a Christmas tradition (as of three or four years.) We watch “The Nativity Story” every Christmas eve. This year as we were watching it it struck me that Mary was (at least in the movie) the same age as I am this Christmas. My age. I think of myself in her place. Becoming betrothed at this young age, and then an angel of the lord appearing before me telling me that I would bear the savior. I think of how unworthy I am to be offered Christ’s salvation, let alone  to carry him in my womb. How must Marry have felt?

And to tell your betrothed and your family that you are pregnant, claiming that the child was conceived of the holy spirit. I would probably not believe Mary if I knew her today. How much courage it must have taken!

Then to travel far away from your parents and home town, give birth in a strange town, and not only that but in a stable. How lonely she must have felt giving birth with only Joseph and the animals around her. Missing the comfort of her mother and the celebration that comes with child birth. Oh but how much joy she must have felt when her baby son, the king of the world and the savior of not only her people but of the world, was placed in her arms.

And when the shepherds came and spoke of the miraculous singing and rejoicing they have just witnessed in honor of her son. I understand why she would ponder all these things in her heart.

Could I do this? If an Angel of the Lord told me I must bear the Christ in my womb would I simply say “Let it be to me.” I don’t know what I would have done.

I wanted to post the song that Mary sang in praise to the lord, but I got a bit sidetracked. Here is Luke 1:46-55.

“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

-Luke 1:46-55

A drawing I did tonight. Very sloppy. I didn't do any of the things I was taught, and I did it in about 15 mins. But You understand what it is a drawing of, I hope.
